Five steps
- List what you actually watch. Teams, leagues, local news, a few channels. Most households use far fewer channels than they pay for.
- Find each team’s broadcaster. Some games are on local channels, some on cable networks, some only in a streaming app.
- Start with the free layer. An antenna covers local broadcast channels in many areas. See free options.
- Add only what is missing. One live-TV bundle if you need many channels, or one or two single-network apps if you do not.
- Review before the first renewal. Promotional prices end. Set a reminder and compare again.
Before you cancel cable
- Check your contract for an early-termination fee and the date it ends.
- Return rented equipment and keep the receipt.
- Check whether your internet is bundled and what it costs on its own.
- Ask the provider for the final bill in writing.
What can go wrong
- Internet speed: live video needs a steady connection. Test during the evening, when most people stream.
- Blackouts: some games are blocked in your area on some services. Check the league’s blackout rules.
- Price creep: many services raise prices once a year.
